Attaching the Pockets for the Big Pocket Advent Calendar
Welcome to the second part of the Big Pocket Advent Calendar Along! Today, we’re going to be attaching the pocket strips to the background fabric, so that they actually start to look like pockets.
When it comes to attaching the pocket strips to the background, I like to start on one side edge and work my way across. Baste the pocket edge in position (I’m starting on the Right Hand Side) (A).
Now, move along the pocket strip to the first pocket join seam and match it up with the pins that you positioned in Step 12 (B) & (C).
Starting from the bottom of the pocket, sew up 1/8” from the pocket seam, across at the top and back down the other side. Repeat for each pocket.
TIP: if you have one, a walking foot is very helpful at this stage to prevent the fabric being eaten when you start stitching. If you don’t have one, try using a spare piece of fabric (a leader) for the first few stitches before going onto the calendar.
Once all the pockets have been stitched onto the background piece, the pockets can now be formed.
I like to start where the pockets are joined: take the stitched, folded edge and match it with the pocket seam and pin/clip in place (D). Take the other folded pocket edge and again match it to the pocket seam and pin/clip in place (E).
(D) (E) (F)
You should find that the pockets at the edges will naturally fall into the correct position, leaving a seam allowance of 1/4″ (F).
Continue following the pattern to complete the rest of the pockets, and joining all the background pieces toether.
I hope you’ve found this useful! Do let me know if you have any further questions,
You can pick up a copy of the pattern here and don’t forget to follow @fabricandflowers and use the hashtag #bigpocketcalendaralong so that everyone can see what you are making. I’d love to share your finished calendars in the final post!
Back next week, for finishing the calendar off!
