The Making of the Beaufort Quilt

I am so excited to share with you my finished Beaufort Quilt – over a year in the making, a lot of Liberty fabric and the use of different skills across all the blocks.

The Beaufort Quilt is inspired by an English Country Garden and was originally run as a Block of the Month program during 2022. It gives you the chance to practise/learn lots of different skills hand-piecing/EPP, applique and FPP.

The Pattern Inspiration

Before I get into the quilt, I thought I would share the inspiration behind the Beaufort Quilt because I always love to know how designs came to be! This pattern was inspired by a visit to Badminton Estate in the summer of 202 owned by the Beaufort Family, which is how the quilt name came to be!

On the day we visited it was gloriously sunny and as we walked in to the orangery at the back of the house, we happened across the most amazing trellis covered by beautiful pink flowers. I have to confess, I was immediately transfixed, turned to my friend and said “I’ve got to make it into a quilt!”.

The trellis work formed the basis for the centre of the quilt, with the flowers and surrounding gardens inspiring the border vine and leaves.

Making the blocks

The Beaufort Quilt was actually run as a Block of the Month program during 2022. It includes sixteen (16) different block designs which cover a range of techniques. Each month we would try out different skills each month – I hand-pieced a lot of my blocks, but you could easily EPP them if you’d rather.

There’s also Foundation Paper Piecing and appliqué (which you can do using needle-turn or raw edge techniques). So as you can see there was lots of flexibility!

As a Block of the Month program, each month we would focus on just one or two designs at a time…..the main problem was that each month I would end up with a new favourite!!! Borders were added to some to turn them into feature blocks, whilst others were combined to make filler-blocks.

I used mostly Liberty fabrics, combined with a few blenders so my Beaufort Quilt is very scrappy – some of the ladies who were taking part used a much smaller colour palette and these looked really good too!

It’s amazing how quickly the blocks – and your confidence in each of the techniques! – grows and before you know it you have a finished quilt and have to decide how to quilt it….!!!

Make your Own Beaufort Quilt

If you feel tempted to make your own Beaufort Quilt, you’ll be pleased to know that I have pulled together all the information from the Block of the Month program and made it available as both a pattern and a course!

Despite the size and designs of the different blocks included, the Beaufort Quilt is suitable for Confident Beginners – one of the ladies who took part in the Block of the Month made this as her second quilt, just make sure to chose the Online Course option so that you have the extra support of videos alongside the comprehensive PDF.

The Beaufort Quilt Pattern is a total of 87-pages and includes written instructions for how to do all of the techniques that are used in the quilt, step-by-step instructions for each of the blocks and templates. I’ve also made the pattern super user friendly by including lots of hyper-links so that you can easily navigate your way around the document.

If you are more of a visual learner or earlier in your quilt journey, the Beaufort Quilt Course is perfect for you! Alongside the PDF, it also includes the original BOM structure (if you want to follow it), an introduction to colour and choosing fabrics for a quilt as well as over 2 hours of video for each of the techniques covered.

I can’t wait to see more Beaufort Quilts pop up in the wild!
